Chin correction

Chin correction

In terms of evolutionary history the human chin only developed recently. It is however an important element of the overall appearance of our faces. Men's chins denote strength; in the case of women a well-proportioned chin contributes to a face´s perfection.

Even if beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it is generally agreed that the profile of a well-balanced chin extends as far forward as the outermost tip of the lower lip. Corrective chin surgery aims to come as close as possible to this profile, either by means of a chin implant; a course of injections or by reduction surgery on the bone.

Chin implants are the most common method and a permanent solution. The injection of hyaluronic acid or the patient's own body fat allows an improvement of the contours; these are however only slight changes and are, in the case of hyaluronic acid, not permanent. In the case of body fat more than one treatment may be required to achieve the desired result.

The most frequent procedure where chin augmentation is concerned consists of inserting a silicone implant under the skin (or the periosteum, the membrane lining the outer surface of the bone) against the chin bone. Using a chin implant enables a considerable increase in chin size to be achieved. Chin augmentations carried out using this method are generally permanent. The shape of the chin may however change over the course of time.

Your chin can be remodelled both in terms of width and also lateral projection – i. e. how far the chin protrudes in the facial profile. The maximum possible augmentation height for the lateral projection of a chin is approx. 10 mm.

The operation takes approx. 1 hour and is carried out in an outpatients' clinic under anaesthetic. Swelling can last 6 – 8 weeks. Since the scar is located on the gum it is not externally visible.
