The nose is the centre of elegance. Humpback nose, crooked nose, boxer nose, accident nose, saddle nose – the list of names for a supposedly unsightly nose seems unlimited. At the same time, the nose is one of the most important elements of the face: with its simple elegance, it is the foundation of your expression. Like no other organ, the nose has very different tissue structures. These include connective tissue and mucous membranes, small muscles, bones and cartilage. A rhinoplasty must therefore be planned and prepared with particular care.
Rhinoplasty is one of the most demanding aesthetic operations in nasal surgery
A rhinoplasty, or nose job, is considered one of the most requested surgeries in plastic-aesthetic surgery. At the same time, it is one of the most demanding surgeries and requires the highest precision and the greatest skill. Therefore, we work together with specially trained nose surgeons. In addition to the technical competence, what matters most to us is the aesthetic sensibility of the surgeon. Since both can be relevant: an aesthetic as well as a functional correction. In nasal surgery, the physician should therefore recognize the personality of the patient and optimally reconcile the result with his individual assessment.
What can be achieved with rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty can be used to remove visible deformities, such as nasal bumps, it can shorten or lengthen the nose, or change the shape of the tip of nose and nostrils. But it can also be remedy ventilation problems that have occurred due to distortion of the nasal sheath. Anyone who suffers from a too big or hooked nose can opt for a correction here as well. Generally: Surgery should not be performed before the facial skeleton has completed its growth.
Thorough preliminary discussion of the nose correction
Before we operate, we digitally document your face and use the photos to simulate the course of the surgery. This way you can see in advance how you will work. Different types of noses require different procedures. Depending on the appearance and the desired change of the nose shape, a “gentle” nose correction with hyaluronic acid injection can be possible.
If there is a functional restriction of the nose, if you can smell little or nothing or have trouble breathing, it may be necessary to straighten the nasal septum, to correct the bridge of the nose or to reduce the nasal turbinates. We do not rely solely on our aesthetic expertise. We receive support from the experienced nose surgeon and ENT physician Dr Maiwald, together with whom we have been able to give back a piece of life-quality to many patients.
In addition to the general aesthetic judgement, the focus must be on an understanding of the various aesthetic requirements depending on the age, gender and ethnic background of our patients. For the planning of an aesthetic rhinoplasty individual factors therefore contribute to determine the procedure. Important factors are for example:
- Age and general health
- medical history
- Skin condition (especially in the area of the nasal tip and bridge of the nose)
- Bony and cartilaginous nature of the nasal skeleton (e.g., axis misalignments and asymmetries)
- Proportions and profile of the facial skull
- ethnic characteristics and peculiarities of the nose
Often unwanted nose shapes are also associated with a change in the “inner nose”, which causes an impairment of nasal breathing. In these cases, it is important to carry out a purely functional surgery in addition to the aesthetic rhinoplasty.

The nose operation (nose plastic) is carried out under general anaesthesia. The nasal tip correction is the procedure with the least effort and takes about one hour. If the bone is also to be corrected, the surgery can last up to two hours. Combinations in which not only the nasal form but also nasal breathing should be corrected must be calculated with up to four hours, depending on the initial situation. A second correction also usually takes more time.
When the appearance is corrected, the cartilaginous tip of the nose and the bony bridge of the nose are adjusted. To do this, the surgeon reduces the nasal framework and reshapes it. Whether it is to be raised, shortened, lowered or otherwise changed, depends on the individual basic conditions of the patients.
What should be considered after nasal surgery?
As a rule, an outpatient stay is sufficient. After the operation, patients recover from general anaesthesia and surgery for around two hours before leaving the practice with the help of an accompanying person. In rare cases, hospitalization may be required. Usually, the stay does not last longer than one night.
Which bandages patients receive depends on the operation. If it is a purely aesthetic correction, tamponage can be dispensed with. If the nasal septum has been corrected, patients will receive soft, silicone splints fitted with a breathing tube. The nasal tip correction is dressed with skin-coloured tape. If the bony part of the nose is corrected, a splint of thermoplastic material must be applied.
Swelling can occur, which usually lasts for several weeks. The final result can only be assessed when the swelling has subsided.
