A full, rounded butt cannot be specifically shaped through exercise or diet—the volume and contour of the buttocks are largely determined by genetics. Anyone looking to make a change—whether after pregnancy, weight loss, or simply out of a desire for a more harmonious silhouette—now has two very different options.
I am Dr. Juliane Bodo, a board-certified specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery in Berlin-Charlottenburg. I offer the Brazilian Butt Lift using both autologous fat and the hyaluronic acid filler Variofill®—depending on your initial condition, desired outcome, and personal preference. We’ll discuss which method is right for you during a detailed consultation.
What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
A Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) involves enlarging and reshaping the buttocks—either using the patient’s own fat or a special hyaluronic acid filler. Both methods can not only increase the volume of the buttocks but also harmonize the overall body silhouette.
Who is this procedure suitable for?
A Brazilian butt lift is suitable for patients who:
- have flat or poorly defined buttocks
- who want to regain volume after pregnancy or weight loss
- want a more harmonious silhouette with a defined waist and curves
- would prefer not to use implants
For BBL using the patient’s own fat, there must be sufficient fat tissue in other areas of the body—usually the abdomen, back, flanks, or waist. Those with low body fat or who desire only a moderate increase in volume are often better off with Variofill®.
Method 1 – BBL with Autologous Fat
Procedure
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and lasts 2 to 3 hours, depending on its scope. It consists of three steps:
First, I use the proven tumescent technique to extract fat from specific areas of the body—typically the abdomen, back, flanks, and waist. This simultaneously contours the midsection and accentuates the waist. The harvested fat is then processed and purified to ensure maximum survival rate. In the third step, the processed autologous fat is injected precisely into the buttocks using fine cannulas—relatively superficially and evenly distributed—to achieve a natural and harmonious result. The injection sites are closed with ultra-thin sutures.
Advantages over implants:
- No foreign body—no rejection reactions
- A natural-looking result that feels just like your own skin
- Simultaneous Body Contouring Through Liposuction
- Lasting results when fat cells heal successfully
Important Note: Some of the transplanted fat cells may be broken down by the body—in such cases, visible dimples or follow-up treatment may be necessary. The final result becomes apparent after about 3 months.
Method 2 – BBL with Variofill®
Variofill® is a high-quality hyaluronic acid filler manufactured in Germany that was developed specifically for buttock augmentation. Thanks to the strong cross-linking of the hyaluronic acid molecules, the material remains firmly in place even when sitting, exercising, or lying down.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. I mark the treatment areas, disinfect the area, and inject Variofill® precisely into the subcutaneous tissue. The treatment takes about an hour—afterward, you can leave the clinic right away.
Advantages:
- Minimally invasive, no scalpel, no general anesthesia
- No downtime—ready for public use in a short time
- Very low risk; no known serious side effects
- Precise Shaping Through Targeted Injection
Restrictions:
- Variofill® is completely absorbed within about 2 years—the procedure must be repeated if desired
- A maximum of 100 ml can be injected per side—for larger volume increases, autologous fat is the better choice
- Variofill® is approved exclusively for use in the gluteal region—not for the breasts
Preparation for the procedure
For BBL using the patient's own fat (general anesthesia):
- Stop blood-thinning medications (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen) at least ten days in advance
- Do not eat or drink anything starting at midnight before the procedure
- Quit smoking at least two weeks in advance
- Purchase compression pants in advance
- Schedule an escort for the trip home
For BBL with Variofill® (local anesthesia):
- Also stop taking blood-thinning medications at least ten days in advance
- No alcohol 24 hours before treatment
Aftercare & Recovery
After BBL with autologous fat:
- Compression pants: Wear consistently for 4 to 6 weeks
- Lying on Your Back and Sitting: Avoid this as much as possible during the first 2 weeks—ideally, lie on your side or stomach; use special BBL pillows when sitting
- Sport For at least 3 weeks, limit yourself to light daily activity
- Socially acceptable After 1 to 2 weeks
- Final result: Visible after about 3 months
After BBL with Variofill®:
- Compression girdle: Wear for about 14 days
- Exercise, sauna, direct sunlight: Avoid for a few days
- Swimming pool and full bath: Avoid for about 14 days
- Showers: Available starting the next day
Risks & Potential Complications
For BBL using the patient's own fat:
- Swelling and bruising: This is normal; the symptoms usually subside within a few weeks.
- Uneven fat integration: May cause dents—follow-up treatment may be necessary in rare cases
- Risk of infection: Minimized through antibiotic prophylaxis and aseptic technique
- Fat embolism: The most serious risk associated with BBL worldwide occurs when fat is accidentally injected into a blood vessel. I work exclusively on the surface and use special techniques to eliminate this risk.
- Thrombosis, reactions to anesthesia: General Surgical Risks – These are discussed during the preoperative consultation
For the BBL with Variofill®:
- Mild tenderness and bruising: Possible in the first few days, but they subside quickly
- No known serious side effects when used correctly
Cost of a Brazilian Butt Lift in Berlin.

- BBL with Variofill® 2 × 50 ml: approx. 3,800 €
