The so-called “fat-away injection” (injection lipolysis) is a minimally invasive method for the targeted reduction of small fat deposits. It is ideal for patients who want to remove stubborn fat deposits—without surgery or extended downtime. At our clinic in Berlin, we have been using this method for many years.

Who is the fat-dissolving injection suitable for?

This treatment is particularly suitable for:

  • localized fat deposits, such as on the double chin, upper arms, hips, or knees

  • small pockets of fat that persist despite exercise and a healthy diet

  • People with a normal body weight and stable skin structure

Injection lipolysis is not suitable for individuals who are severely overweight, have significant skin laxity, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How does injection lipolysis work?

The active ingredient—usually deoxycholic acid—is injected directly into the fatty tissue. There, it destroys the membranes of the fat cells, which are then broken down by the body via the lymphatic system and the liver. Since the affected cells do not regrow, the result is permanent—provided that body weight remains stable.

Treatment procedure

  1. Consulting and Analysis: We'll discuss your needs, examine the treatment area, and create a personalized treatment plan.

  2. Preparation: The skin is cleaned and, if necessary, a local anesthetic is applied.

  3. Injection: The active ingredient is injected into the fatty tissue over a wide area using very fine needles.

  4. Follow-up care: A brief massage helps ensure even distribution.

The procedure takes about 20 to 45 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis.

Number of sessions and duration

Typically, 2 to 4 sessions are required, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart. Initial results become apparent after 4 to 6 weeks at the earliest. The full results are usually visible after 2 to 3 months.

Possible Side Effects and Risks

Mild, temporary reactions may occur after treatment:

  • Swelling, redness, or bruising

  • Tightness or tenderness

  • Temporary hardening or the formation of lumps

  • Rare: Pigment changes or infections

The side effects listed are generally harmless and resolve on their own. Serious complications are very rare when the medication is used properly.

Post-Treatment Care

  • You should avoid exercise, saunas, and sunbathing for the first 48 hours.

  • Applying a cold compress can help reduce swelling.

  • Makeup should be applied no sooner than the following day.

  • Drink enough water to support the breakdown process.

Light exercise (such as walking) is beneficial, while strenuous physical activity should be avoided during the first week.

What can be achieved with the fat-removal injection?

Injection lipolysis is ideal for contouring smaller areas. However, it is not a substitute for traditional liposuction when larger volumes need to be reduced or the body’s contours need to be significantly altered. When used for the right indications, however, the results are long-lasting and visible—without any surgery or anesthesia.
