I am Dr. Juliane Bodo, specialist in Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery in Berlin-Charlottenburg. As a Galderma speaker for Restylane fillers and a certified speaker for the German Society for Botulinum Toxin Therapy (DGBT), I train colleagues myself in injection techniques. What is hyaluronic acid and how does it work?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural, body-own substance that is responsible for the skin's moisture, elasticity, and firmness. It can bind 1,000 times its weight in water. As we age, the body's own production decreases, resulting in a loss of volume, the formation of wrinkles, and sagging facial contours.

Through targeted injections, the skin is plumped up, wrinkles are smoothed, and lost volume is restored. The result is immediately visible – and, with the right technique, completely natural.

Which products am I using?

I work exclusively with high-quality branded products from Galderma – the manufacturer of Restylane, Croma, Teoxane & Merz. The various products differ in their consistency and cross-linking density:

  • Low-cross-linked hyaluronic acid: For fine lines, lip border definition, and superficial corrections
  • Medium-chain cross-linked hyaluronic acid: For nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and subtle lip augmentation
  • Highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid: For deep volume augmentation in cheeks, chin, and temples

MD Codes – Structured Injection Technique for Natural Results

I work according to Dr. Mauricio de Maio’s MD Codes system—an anatomically based injection method that divides the face into defined treatment zones. Instead of treating individual wrinkles in isolation, the face is viewed as a whole. The result is more harmonious, natural, and long-lasting.

Combination with Botox

Hyaluronic acid and botulinum toxin complement each other ideally – and are very frequently combined in my practice. Botox relaxes the muscles and reduces expression lines. Hyaluronic acid replenishes volume and smooths static wrinkles. Both together yield the most natural and longest-lasting result. You can find more information on my Botox page.

How does the treatment work?

  • Consultation: Analysis of the skin condition and joint planning of the treatment
  • Numbing: Upon request, a numbing cream is applied – the procedure is generally very well tolerated
  • Injection: The hyaluronic acid is injected precisely using a fine needle or blunt cannula – approx. 20 minutes
  • Aftercare: Mild swelling or redness will subside within a few hours
  • Results: Visible immediately—the final results appear after up to 14 days

How long does the effect last?

The duration of the results depends on the product used and the individual’s response. As a general guideline, results last 6–18 months, depending on the treatment area. I recommend a 6-month treatment cycle to achieve lasting results with the lowest possible dose.

Follow-up care

  • Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds on the day of your treatment
  • Sauna not until the next day
  • No strenuous exercise on the day of treatment
  • Do not apply pressure to the treated areas for the first 24 hours
  • No make-up directly after the treatment in the area of the injection sites

Risks & Notes

Hyaluronic acid is one of the most well-tolerated substances in aesthetic medicine. Nevertheless, the following can occur:

  • Redness, swelling, and small bruises at the injection sites—these subside within a few hours to a few days
  • Overcorrection: If the result is stronger than desired, hyaluronidase (Hylase) can selectively reduce the effect
  • Very rare: Vascular occlusion due to accidental injection into a blood vessel—minimized through knowledge of anatomy and proper injection technique
  • Do not undergo treatment if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a known allergy to hyaluronic acid, or have acute inflammation in the treatment area.

Frequently asked questions about wrinkle treatment with hyaluronic acid.

The costs depend on the amount used and the area treated. As a general rule: from 450 euros per ml. Simple lip modeling (1 ml) starts from 450 euros, while more extensive volume building with several ml costs correspondingly more. We will discuss the exact costs during a non-binding consultation.

The result is usually visible immediately after the treatment. Since hyaluronic acid binds water, slight swelling in the first 1-2 days may enhance the result a bit. You will see the final result after about 14 days.

This depends on the product used, the treated area, and your individual metabolism. As a general guide: lips 6–9 months, deep wrinkles and volume restoration 12–18 months. I recommend a touch-up every 6–12 months to maintain a lasting result with a low dose.

The treatment is generally very well tolerated. Upon request, we use a numbing cream, and many of our products already contain an integrated local anesthetic (lidocaine). Most female patients describe the treatment as more pleasant than expected.

You should avoid direct sun, saunas, and intense exercise on the day of the treatment. You can use make-up again starting the next day. After lip filler injections, I also recommend avoiding very hot food and drinks for 24 hours.

When applied correctly, risks are minimal. Possible temporary reactions include redness, slight swelling, and small bruises – these usually subside completely within 1–3 days. Serious complications are extremely rare with an experienced specialist.

Hyaluronic acid is a complex sugar (polysaccharide) that is found almost everywhere in the human body. In the area of the skin, hyaluronic acid ensures the natural elasticity and firmness of the connective tissue. As we age, its natural proportion in the body decreases and wrinkles form. By using hyaluronic acid products with varying degrees of cross-linking, we can specifically compensate for this deficit and restore a fresh look to the face.

Botulinum toxin (Botox) relaxes muscles and smooths dynamic expression lines. Hyaluronic acid restores volume, contours lips, and treats static, deep wrinkles. Both methods can be combined exceptionally well—in many cases, this is the most effective strategy.
