Liposuction in Berlin – Targeted Body Contouring, Not Weight Loss

Some fat deposits just won’t go away—no matter how disciplined you are with your workouts or diet. Stomach, hips, thighs, upper arms: Genetically determined fat deposits aren’t a matter of willpower. They’re anatomically determined and hardly respond to exercise or diet. This is exactly where liposuction comes in.

I am Dr. Juliane Bodo, a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Liposuction—medically known as liposuction—is not a weight-loss method, but rather a tool for targeted body contouring. The goal is a harmonious silhouette—not the number on the scale.

Not every provider is qualified—you should know that

The technique of liposuction is taught exclusively as part of the residency program in plastic and aesthetic surgery—under the guidance of experienced specialists, over the course of several years. In Germany, however, it is legally permitted for doctors without this specialization to offer liposuction. Some obtain a certificate after taking a weekend course. This is not an indicator of quality.

As a board-certified specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery, I bring with me comprehensive surgical training, in-depth knowledge of anatomy, and nearly 20 years of experience performing approximately 500 procedures per year. That’s the difference you’ll see in the results.

On which parts of the body do I perform liposuction?

Liposuction can be performed on nearly all areas of the body:

  • Abdomen & Flanks
  • Hips & Buttocks
  • Inner & outer thighs
  • Upper arms
  • Chin & Neck Area
  • Back & Bra Area
  • Knee & Lower Leg

I often combine liposuction with other procedures—for example, a tummy tuck, an upper arm lift, or a thigh lift. The fat can also be reused for breast augmentation using autologous fat or a Brazilian butt lift.

What methods do I use?

At my clinic, I rely on three proven techniques—depending on the body area, tissue condition, and desired result:

Tumescent Liposuction (TLA)

The standard technique in plastic surgery. A special solution is injected into the fatty tissue—it dissolves the fat, minimizes blood loss, and reduces swelling after the procedure. Proven, safe, and suitable for nearly all areas of the body.

Water-Jet-Assisted Liposuction (WLA)

A fine stream of water gently loosens the fat from the tissue before it is suctioned out. The advantage: The surrounding tissue and blood vessels remain largely unaffected. This method is particularly well-suited when the fat is to be reused for autologous fat transfer—the survival rate of the fat cells is significantly higher.

Vibration-Assisted Liposuction (VLA)

The cannula moves with subtle vibrations that mechanically break up the fat. This allows for particularly precise work in harder-to-reach areas of the body and reduces the amount of force required—resulting in a more even outcome.

I choose the method after conducting a thorough analysis of your initial situation. Sometimes I also combine several techniques within a single procedure.

The Liposuction Procedure at My Clinic

Preparation The procedure begins with a detailed consultation. We’ll discuss the areas you’d like to have treated, your expectations, and conduct preliminary medical examinations. To prepare, I recommend avoiding nicotine, alcohol, and blood-thinning medications for at least two weeks before the surgery.

Implementation The procedure takes 2–3 hours and is performed under general or local anesthesia, depending on its scope. Through small, barely visible incisions measuring 3–5 mm, I insert the cannula and remove the fat precisely and gently. The incisions are then professionally closed.

After the surgery You’ll wear a compression garment for 6 weeks—it helps reshape the tissue and reduce swelling. After 1–2 weeks, most patients are ready to return to social activities. You may be discharged as an outpatient or stay overnight at my clinic.

Aftercare & Healing Process

  • Compression garment: Wear it consistently for 6 weeks—it helps reshape the tissue and reduce swelling
  • Light exercise: Helps improve blood circulation after just a few days
  • Lymphatic Drainage: I recommend complementary lymphatic drainage treatments—they reduce swelling much more quickly and improve the final result
  • Sports and physical exertion: Do not resume until after 6 weeks
  • Socially acceptable: After 1–2 weeks
  • Initial results: Visible after a few weeks—the final results will be visible after 3–6 months, once all swelling has completely subsided

Important for skin elasticity: Liposuction achieves optimal results when the skin has sufficient natural elasticity to retract after the procedure. If skin elasticity is limited, a complementary skin-tightening treatment may be advisable—we’ll discuss this together during your consultation.

Risks & Potential Complications

As with any surgical procedure, liposuction also carries risks, which I will discuss with you in full:

  • Swelling & bruising: Normal and subside within a few weeks
  • Numbness: Temporary changes in sensation in the treated area—these usually return to normal after a few weeks to months
  • Irregularities on the skin's surface: Excessively aggressive liposuction can cause dimpling—which is minimized by my precise technique and conservative fat removal volume
  • Postoperative bleeding: Rare; minimized through careful preoperative evaluation and surgical technique
  • Infections: Very rare when performed under sterile conditions
  • Loss of skin elasticity: When there is a very large amount of fat or the skin is older, the skin may not be able to fully regain its elasticity—in this case, a complementary skin tightening procedure may be advisable
  • General surgical risks: thrombosis, reactions to anesthesia—these will be discussed during the preoperative consultation

Skin elasticity

Liposuction produces optimal results only if the Skin has sufficient elasticity reserves has the ability to regress after the procedure. This regression takes several weeks. If the skin lacks sufficient elasticity, a combination of liposuction and a skin lift—for example,. BodyTite are recommended.
